Key Takeaway: “Leadership is the most fascinating role in the world. It transcends all things. Business, family, sports, etc.” Coach Mike Krzyzewksi (Duke University)

Context

As I have spent my Thanksgiving week looking back at the year, I also spent time thinking about my Leadership journey. The quote in the Key Takeaway this week is a great starting point for my reflection.

Leadership is fascinating. It has been in all aspects of my life from the time I was a child to now in my coaching Leaders. It has taught me so many things, it has challenged me in so many ways, and it has been rewarding in so many aspects of my life.

I have had my life altered by great Leaders, and I have hopefully positively altered the lives of those I was entrusted to or was chosen by to lead.

The fascinating part was first learning there is an art and science to being a good Leader. Then it was learning about each person, either on my team or others (you are not just a Leader to your team). Then trying to figure out the best Leadership methods to help others succeed based on what I had learned about them and their ideas of success. And finally, it is fascinating when you realize that even with all this effort, thought, and time there will be those who you can’t help reach Success. That might be because it’s beyond your control or capabilities (like promotions or new roles), or simply because even though you put in great effort, they’re still human and have the usual weaknesses. For example, their poor choices which may lead to consequences are not on you if you have done all you can to Lead them. Remember, they are human.

This came to the front of mind this week for me. It’s true that no matter how many times you remind your child to be careful on the bike, stay alert, keep a safe distance, or just focus, they’ll still have accidents. And it is easy to say “I told you so,” but as a Leader, you need to figure out how to support them and help them learn from it. The same is true for your other Leadership roles in life. As we learned last week there will be some failures. And it is fascinating to spend time learning how you can use those for growth.

Guiding Philosophies

  • Be fascinated by theories and systems of Leadership. Which seem to work for you?

  • Be fascinated by those you come in contact with, especially those who challenge you. What can you learn about everyone, including yourself?

  • Be fascinated with both successes and failures. How did they happen?

  • Enjoy the wonderment of people and your abilities to Lead them. As I have said before, this is the most fascinating part to me. As I began getting more cultures and people in my Leadership sphere it was astonishing to learn about them all as individuals, and really put thought into how to ensure they achieved their success.

Wrap-Up

Leadership is a role that is never done. At times it is thrust on you, and at times you choose it. Leadership can be difficult and even messy, but it is truly important. So give it the focus and effort needed for your Leadership Successes.
